I’ve watched this scene so many times, and not once did I realise that Dean’s expression is almost as heartbreaking as Cas’s. Also:

The whole time Sam is speaking here, Dean can’t take his eyes off of the samulet.

#Yes #Can we talk about Dean’s expression here? #How he must be feeling at that moment? #Not only has he ‘corrupted’ an angel and dragged him down into the mud #What with Cas using ‘son of a bitch’ here and whatnot #But he can also relate to the frustrated yet obviously defeated anger Castiel is expressing here #Because he knows firsthand what it feels like to have a father that doesn’t respond #Even when their child is reaching out to them at their darkest hour #John didn’t give two shits about Dean when he got electrocuted and was going to die were it not for the faith healer #So he understands perfectly how it feels to seek approval and love where none exists #No recognition only a soldier good for obeying orders #Not only that but it turns out that a present most dear to Dean at this point proved utterly ineffective #This whole exchange transmutes the amulet from something precious into a symbol of neglect #Sam gave it to Dean instead of John because John wasn’t there while Dean was #And the amulet once again shows its roots to an absent father with this exchange #And so the memory of the amulet is forever tarnished #Not out of Castiel’s fault because he failed mind you #They both dared to hope that somebody would listen #And they were wrong. #Dean and Cas are more alike than people give them credit.
